Freshmen Visit Virginia Tech
- by R. Ankrom
Chatham Hall’s freshmen class, led by Rector Dr. Gary Fountain, Academic Dean Martha Griswold, and English teacher Gwen Couch, braved unseasonably cold weather and April snow as they traveled to Blacksburg, VA and the Virginia Tech campus.
The day started with a poetry reading and conversation with Nikki Giovanni. Giovanni, a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech, is a best-selling and award-winning author of more than 30 collections. Additionally, the recording of her poetry reading was nominated for a Grammy and she was recently named as one of Oprah’s 25 living-legends.
The group was then honored with a private meeting with Virginia Tech President Dr. Charles Steger, who spoke about the virtues of Virginia Tech while also fielding a few questions that the students had. Freshman Class President, Susanna Hogg, presented Dr. Steger with a Chatham Hall tie and he returned the favor by giving everyone a Virginia Tech hat.
The group then took a campus tour before enjoying lunch in the D2 dining center.
