Riding
Whether you’ve been riding your whole life or have always wanted to start, you can find a place in our program. The Chatham Hall campus is home to more than 40 horses, three teaching arenas, a permanent Hunter Trials course, and plenty of trails, making it one of the top equestrian boarding schools.
Riding is part of the Athletic Department, and students receive credit for their team participation each semester. At this equestrian boarding school, all riders are members of the Chatham Hall Riding Team. The riding team consists of three levels: Varsity (chosen by tryouts each semester), Junior Varsity A, and Junior Varsity B. Along with daily lessons, each team member is required to participate in a number of activities each semester based on her riding level. Typically these include on-campus horse shows, off-campus horse shows, trips to other riding facilities in the area, and other weekend activities.
The riding program at our boarding school is centered on the Modern Forward Riding System for Hunters and Jumpers. Our students participate in local and "A" rated horse shows within a 2 hour radius of school. Our lessons consist of mounted and un-mounted instruction, and focus on horsemanship as well as riding. Students learn the method behind the instruction and how to handle a variety of horses.
Our school horses are donated from a variety of professionals. They are all schooled in the forward system of riding and range in ability from the beginner school string to advanced level show horses. Horses are available for lease to students who prefer to focus their attention on one horse throughout the show season. Students may also board their own horse at the Chatham Hall equestrian facility.
Our Director of Riding is James Morris. Riding instructors include Samantha Fleming and Alyson Kent.
