2018: Kathy Reynolds Chandler ’68, Non-Profit Founder

Kathy Reynolds Chandler ’68 was inducted into the National Disabled Ski Hall of Fame in 2013. This prestigious award spotlights “individuals who have had an influential role in disabled sports as well as athletes who have excelled in disabled sports.” In 2015 she was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Waterville Valley Resort.
Ms. Chandler founded the Waterville Valley Resort’s Adaptive Snowsports Program in 1992 which continues to be recognized nationally as a premier adaptive sports program. Five years later, she formed a non-profit organization, AbilityPLUS Inc., committed to helping other mountains make their facilitiesand programs accessible to individuals with disabilities.

While at AbilityPLUS, nine other programs were started in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Each year since 2007, her organization has hosted soldiers who were wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan with support from Disabled Sports USA. She has also served on the Board of Directors of Massachusetts Special Olympics.

In March 2017 she went to Austria to the World Games as a coach for the U.S. Special Olympics Alpine Ski Team. In 2009 she took the first sit down skier to the World Games in Alaska for Special Olympics International. Over the years, Ms. Chandler has traveled to Spain, Austria, and Canada and throughout the U.S. to teach adaptive ski techniques. Ms. Chandler currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Chatham Hall, and is a former member of the Alumnae Council.
