Students Explore Creativity During Spring Performing Arts

This spring, Chatham Hall actors and dancers explored their creative sides during two productions.

In the Black Box, theatre students presented Hotel Cassiopeia, an experimental play by Charles L. Mee that takes place in the mind of artist Joseph Cornell, played by Catherine Nichols ‘24. Throughout the play, the audience witnesses many short scenes from Cornell’s internal vantage point including him reliving memories, remembering film scenes, and grappling with loss and loneliness. The play relies on audio and visual displays, as well as the supporting actors that bring this troubled story to life. The Spring Play was directed by Mr. Cameron Ayres and supported by assistant director Ginny Hopkins ‘23 and Nichols, who made directorial contributions. Additionally, Marland Bustamante ‘23, Keri Campbell ‘24, and Elizabeth Stafford ‘25 organized many of the audio-visual components.

The spring dancers used their medium to tell stories of love and heartbreak. The layout of Van Voorhis Lecture Hall (Dutch) was altered so the performance could take place on the main floor among the audience, giving them the opportunity to be a part of the show while the dancers moved around them. Each audience member had a unique vantage point during each of the six short performances. Spring Dance was led by Ms. Kaykeel Dillard with select pieces choreographed by Sheker Atayeva ‘23, Anaiah “Ana” Charway ‘26, and V Edwards ‘23.
