Parents Spearhead Barn Classroom Renovations

Thanks to the hard work of a group of parents, faculty, and staff, the barn classroom was recently reimagined and renovated to better serve the Riding Program.
Inspiration struck while Director of Riding Ally Doyon and Assistant Director of Riding Emma Lane were brainstorming how to improve the classroom and add more storage. Sally Whatley P’23 joined the conversation during a visit to campus, pulling in other parents to help with the improvements. The work began with the goal of completing the renovations in time for the School to host the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) instructor clinic in April.

In addition to Whatley, Kathy and Steve Risley P'26 and Eliza and Lee Stephenson P’27 spearheaded the project, donating time, money, and materials to overhaul the area. The result is a beautiful and more functional space for learning and comradery. Several other current and past parents and alumnae also donated time or funds to the cause.

Renovations included installing new cabinetry, bench seating, table and chairs, appliances, TV, and artwork and decor, as well as improvements to the bathrooms and kitchen area.

“The classroom is now a very usable space. We can fit the entire IEA team in the classroom for unmounted instruction, and also gather for meals and social events,” noted Doyon. “The new storage spaces will allow us to keep more riding gear and show clothes so that our riders don’t always have to purchase these expensive items. The space also enabled us to host a large USHJA clinic this spring, with hopefully more events to follow!”

At the close of the school year, the Risleys and Stephensons were recognized with the 2024 Peter & Dee Dee McKay Award for Parent Leadership, which they accepted on the front steps of Pruden Hall during the Song Contest on May 24.
