Chatham Hall Students Experience Cambodia First-Hand
Chatham Hall Students Embark on an Engaging Journey Through Cambodia

Over spring break, a group of Chatham Hall students embarked on an unforgettable trip to Cambodia, immersing themselves in the country’s rich culture, history, and service work. From the moment they arrived, their adventure was filled with meaningful experiences. International travel has a way of teaching both humbling and exhilarating experiences that are often inaccessible when one stays in one's normal environment.

Their travels began with a deep dive into Cambodia’s past, visiting the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields at Choeung Ek. Confronting the country's tragic history firsthand, they met survivor and artist Huy Vannak, who shared his personal story through his artwork.
The trip quickly shifted gears as the students explored vibrant markets, honing their bargaining skills and sampling exotic delicacies—tarantulas, scorpions, and even snakehead fish!

At Camp Beng Mea Lea, they fully encountered the facts of rural life as they engaged in hands-on service projects. They constructed water jugs for local families, laid tiles to help improve a local school, and taught English lessons at a nearby school. Their efforts left a tangible impact, and they formed meaningful connections with the community. Evenings were spent playing soccer and volleyball with local students and sharing laughter in the camp’s beloved hammocks.

Exploring Cambodia’s ancient wonders was another highlight, from climbing the towering temples of Koh Ker to witnessing the beautiful sunrise at Angkor Wat. Their adventures also took them to the “Tomb Raider” temple of Ta Prohm and the intricately carved Banteay Srei, known as the "Lady Temple."
The trip wrapped up with a cultural immersion in Siem Reap, where students took a traditional Cambodian cooking class, marveled at acrobatic performances at the Phare Circus, and explored the impact of war at the Cambodia Landmine Museum.

This transformative journey pushed each student outside her comfort zone, deepened her understanding of the world, and strengthened her bond with her fellow travelers. From service work to historical exploration and cultural discoveries, Cambodia left an indelible mark on every participant—one that will inspire them long after their return home.
