Chatham Hall Students Experience the Rich Culture of Spain
Chatham Hall students embarked on an enriching journey through Spain, beginning in Málaga, where they stayed with welcoming host families and attended immersive Spanish classes at the Malaca Institute. The first few days brought both rain but also excitement as the students quickly adjusted to their new environment. Their confidence in speaking Spanish grew remarkably, and they eagerly embraced the challenge of navigating daily life in a new language.
Beyond the classroom, the students explored historic Málaga, touring La Catedral de Málaga, shopping in local markets, and even participating in a traditional Spanish cooking class where they learned to make paella and torrijas. They also visited the charming and historical villages of Frigiliana and Nerja, walking through narrow cobblestone streets and taking in breathtaking coastal views while learning about the ties between Moorish and Hispanic cultures in the past.
As they traveled through southern Spain, the students visited Granada, where they explored the majestic Alhambra, a stunning example of Moorish architecture and a famous UNESCO World Heritage site. Their journey continued in Seville, where they toured the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, La Catedral de Sevilla, and climbed the iconic La Giralda tower for panoramic city views.
The final leg of their trip brought them to Madrid, Spain’s vibrant capital. They took a scenic walk through Parque Retiro, dined near the historic Plaza Mayor, and prepared for their last day filled with cultural highlights, including visits to the renowned Prado Museum and the Royal Palace.
While the students were undoubtedly tired from their jam-packed itinerary (and the endless walking!), they made the most of every experience, strengthening their Spanish skills, immersing themselves in the culture, and forming unforgettable memories. Their journey through Spain was a transformative adventure that will stay with them for years to come!
