February 2026 will usher in the 50th anniversary of Black History Month. Founded by Carter G. Woodson, a noted historian of the early 20th century, Negro History Week was officially recognized by President Gerald Ford as Black History Month in 1976. Black History Month has emerged as a nationwide celebration of culture, education, science, and the fine arts across the African diaspora in the decades since its inception.
This year, the theme for Black History Month 2025 is "African Americans and Labor". Throughout the month, African Americans' contributions to this nation's development will be acknowledged online and in schools, churches, community centers, and museums nationwide.
